FARMINGTON – On a cold and drizzly afternoon, the University of Maine at Farmington baseball team (14-10) were held without a run in back-to-back contests for the first time this season. Fisher College shutout the Beavers, 10-0, in game one of a non-conference doubleheader at Hippach Field on Monday.
As the rain started to cascade, the playing conditions worsened and the Falcons seem to find the holes in the Beavers defense for the early lead.
After surrendering four runs in the top of the second, UMF had a chance to trim Fisher’s lead in the bottom of the frame. Jimmy Neal (Farmington, Maine) started off the inning with a single to right field and Tom Grady (Whitefield, Maine) ripped a single into left to put the Beavers in business. A strikeout and a pair of groundouts ended the scoring threat for Farmington.
Riley Chickering (Otisfield, Maine) battled the conditions with six strong innings with three strikeouts while issuing one walk.
The Beavers had more chances in the second contest, but still could not come through with a much-needed clutch hit. UMF trailed after a half of an inning and managed to put runners in scoring position in the first and third innings, but each rally came with at least one out.
Mark Leahy (Rochester, N.H.) started game two for the Beavers and pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on nine hits with one strikeout.
