WILTON – The Fit Girls after school program will be holding their third annual 5K run/walk on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. at Wilson Lake. Last year more than 100 runners and walkers participated in the event which directly supported the program.

Under the direction of Deb Aseltine of Wilton, the mission of Fit Girls is to promote a healthy and active lifestyle that includes regular exercise for the body, the mind and heart.

Aseltine said the “running and reading program builds self-esteem and confidence and helps girls connect with, and give back to, their community. The support we receive from this event helps to keep this a zero cost program for the girls in fourth and fifth grades who participate.”

This year there are over 60 girls participating in the after school programs at the three elementary schools in RSU 9.

With the support from the Carol M. White PEP Grant and a Maine Community Foundation grant and local organizations and businesses, the expansion to Cascade Brook School has been well received. The Fit Girls program, which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is not an RSU 9 sponsored event, but Aseltine is extremely grateful to RSU 9 for the use of facilities.

Aseltine would like to acknowledge and thank Franklin Savings Bank and Western Mountain Financial Services for their support of this 5K event. The run/walk is open to the public.
