BANGOR – The University of Maine at Farmington softball team (2-12, 1-7) rallied in the late innings of the second game of a doubleheader to put the pressure on Husson University after failing to produce a hit in the first game. The Eagles blanked the Beavers, 11-0, in game one and, 6-1, in game two in conference action at O’Keefe FIled on Wednesday afternoon.
The Beavers had runners on base in the second and fourth inning, but could not drive home a run. Kennadi Grover (Cushing, Maine) walked in the second and Hannah Lust (Bangor, Maine) reached on a fielder’s choice, and then advanced to second on a throwing error in the fourth, but both base runners came with two outs and the rallies ended with the next batter.
Emily Vitone (Westminster, Mass.) started in the circle for UMF and lasted nearly three innings as Courtney Fowler (Greensboro, N.C.) came on in relief to finish the game. Husson’s Kayla Merrill (Bethel, Maine) pitched the complete game no-hitter for the Eagles with four strikeouts.
Katie Clark (Westbrook, Maine) ripped an RBI single through the left side in the fourth inning and tied the score, 1-1, in the nightcap of the doubleheader. Shelby Bryant (So. Portland, Maine) led off the inning with single and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Meryl Bond (Jefferson, Maine). Clark stepped up in the clutch and gave UMF a timely hit.
Husson responded in the bottom of the frame with three runs on one hit and forced two errors. The Eagles added two more in the sixth for the final margin of victory.
Fowler pitched a complete game and surrendered two earned runs on four hits while striking out one Eagle.
UMF stays on the road with a doubleheader at Colby on Thursday. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
