Jackson’s near double-double paces UMF in season opener

BOSTON, Mass. – University of Maine at Farmington women’s basketball junior Rhi Jackson (Saco/Waynflete) scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Beavers opened the 2015-2016 campaign with a 62-48 loss to Suffolk University at the Emerson Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Jackson tallied her 11 points on 5-of-13 shooting and nailed a shot from beyond the arc. The junior registered eight rebounds in the opening half and matched a team-high with three offensive rebounds in the game. Meghan Smith (Boothbay/Boothbay Region) added nine points for the Beavers with the duo of Kelly

Pomerleau (Turner/St. Dominic) and Elizabeth Ferry (Winslow/Winslow) scoring seven points apiece.

The Beavers nearly erased nine-point deficit in the first half by closing the gap to one point midway through the third quarter. After Suffolk pushed the lead back to double digits at the end of the third quarter, UMF tried climb back into the game with Smith scoring on the low block, but the Beavers ran out of time.

UMF plays host Emerson College on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the second day of the tournament.
