Jim Smith promoted to UMF softball head coach

FARMINGTON – Director of Athletics, Fitness, and Recreation, Julie Davis, is pleased to announce the hiring of new Head Softball Coach Jim Smith.

Jim Smith has served as the University of Maine at Farmington softball assistant coach since the spring of 2012 after stints with Mt. Blue High School, Mt. Abram High School, and area Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth baseball programs.

His primary function with the team was working with pitchers and catchers along with recruiting. He will pass these responsibilities onto new hire, Kat McKay.

Smith has been a certified ASA/Federation umpire for several years. He has umpired numerous high school playoff games and has worked three national tournaments. In 2012, he became part of the ASA Umpire National Indicator Fraternity.

A three-year starter on the Mt. Abram baseball team, Smith went on to catch at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. He graduated from UMPI in 1992 with a degree in recreation management.
A former men’s modified pitch softball player, he played third base on a state championship team in 2002.

Smith resides in Wilton with his daughter, Macey.
