FARMINGTON – Director of Athletics, Fitness, and Recreation Julie Davis is pleased to announce the hiring of Kat McKay as University of Maine at Farmington’s head softball coach.

“We are most excited about the leadership, network and experience Kat brings to our program. We are certain she has the skill set to guide our softball program to excel in all areas, while also contributing to our department and related University operations,” said Davis.

McKay brings over 10 years of coaching experience to the Beaver program. Most recently, she spent four years building a program as head softball coach at Poland Regional High School. While at Poland, McKay also served as an assistant in the girls’ varsity basketball program as well as head freshmen girls’ basketball coach for the Knights.

Prior to Poland, she was the head softball and junior varsity soccer coach at Saint Dominic Academy for two seasons. Before taking over as head softball coach for the Saints, she was the junior varsity softball coach for three seasons. McKay was an assistant softball coach at UMF in 2015.

This past year, McKay was the assistant athletic director as well as transportation director at Saint Dominic Academy where she had the opportunity to apply her Sports Management degree as well as her Leadership and Organizational theory course work from Central Maine Community College and the University of Southern Maine (USM). McKay, who earned her associates degree in 2006, enrolled at USM in the fall of 2014 to complete her four-year degree. This past year, she enrolled as a full-time student while managing family, work and accomplished her personal goal of participating on the USM softball team.

“I am so excited to work with the UMF players. Coaching softball is my passion and I look forward to building not only better student-athletes, but a team culture for players old and new to the program. This softball program has such a rich history and I feel privileged to be a part of it,” McKay said of the coaching opportunity.
