POULTNEY, Vt. – Officially, the University of Maine at Farmington men’s lacrosse team’s ‘senior day’ was Friday against Husson University.
Apparently, senior attackman Jake Linkletter decided to extend it by a day.
Linkletter netted a UMF record eight goals and 10 points on Saturday to lead the Beavers to a 19-8 North Atlantic Conference win over Green Mountain College.
The eight goals gives Linkletter 23 goals this season, setting a new single season goals record in the process. He eclipsed the old mark of 18, set by Brandon Melville in 2012.
Farmington (4-6, 4-4 NAC) and Green Mountain (0-11, 0-7 NAC) alternated goals through the first quarter and into the second, leaving the game tied 3-3 with 11:09 remaining in the opening half.
The Beavers scored the next five goals to take an 8-3 lead, including three goals by Linkletter. Green Mountain’s Mike Smith broke Farmington’s scoring run with a goal at the 5:02 mark of the quarter, but Linkletter and Melville each added an additional score by the end of the frame to give the Beavers a 10-4 lead at the halfway point.
Farmington scored the first five goals of the second half, extending the Beavers’ lead to 15-4. An Eagle goal late in the third quarter and two more early in the fourth trimmed the UMF lead to 15-7, but the Beavers scored four late goals and held the Eagles to one to control the game for the win.
Melville tallied four goals and two assists in the win, while TC Peters and Nathan Chase both charted two goals and three assists. Sean Berce finished with one goal and four assists.
Smith posted five goals and two assists for Green Mountain, with Nick Parsons logging two goals and one assist.
Farmington goalie Ben Altmaier recorded nine saves in the win, while the Eagles Luke Carey also amassed nine saves.
Farmington will await the conclusion of the final NAC regular season games on Monday before learning its post-season fate.
