Mt. Blue softball comeback falls short in Skowhegan

SKOWHEGAN – Skowhegan scored 6 runs in the 2nd inning for an early 6 to 0 lead and then held off Mt. Blue to pull out a 7 to 6 softball win at Skowhegan High School.

The Indians put together 5 hits in the 2nd inning, highlighted by a Bonnie-Jane Aiken double and RBI singles by Wylie Bedard and Anne Worthen. The Cougars battled back with 2 runs in the 4th and 2 runs in the 6th inning. Trailing 6 to 4 with 2 outs in the 7th Addie Brinkman ripped a single to center. Rachelle Bator followed with a single. Taylor Burke was intentionally walked and Mt. Blue catcher Kayleigh Fontaine delivered a 2 RBI single to tie the game at 6 apiece.

Skowhegan bounced back in the bottom of the 7th on a walk to Julia Steeves. Montana Soucier laid down a sacrifice bunt and pitcher Caitlin Kane slipped and fell while making the throw to 1st with Steeves advancing to 3rd base. Aiken then lofted a sac fly to center field to knock in the game winning run.

Ashley Alward pitched the complete game for Skowhegan (10-5) allowing 7 hits while walking 2 and striking out 10. Taylor Burke pitched 6 innings for the Cougars (5-10) with Kane throwing the 7th. Addie Brinkman had 3 hits for Mt. Blue while Bator and Fontaine added 2 each. Eliza Bedard and Wylie Bedard each had 2 singles for Skowhegan.
