Mt. Blue XC boys first, girls take second at KVACs

AUGUSTA – The Mt. Blue High School Boys Cross Country team took first place and the girls finished second at the KVAC Class A Cross Country Championships at Cony on Saturday.

Mt. Blue’s Tucker Barber was the surprise winner of the boys race. Barber came into the race with the third best time this season, but burst into the lead in the second mile and won by 12 seconds in a time of 16:43.

The Cougars got excellent races from the rest of the varsity squad as well. Zeke Robinson (12), Isaiah Reid (16), Emmett Trafton (20), Sam Stinson (25), Thad Gunther (30), and Trevayne Jackson (41) helped Mt. Blue gain a 14-point victory over defending champion Hampden.

On the girls side, Mt. Blue put forth their best overall race of the season finishing second behind Brunswick. The Hickey sisters, Maeve and Maggie, finished in the identical time of 21:49 taking positions 9 and 10. Kathryn Cullenberg (15), Meg Charles (17), Julia Ramsey (38), Kayla White (39), and Grace Andrews (43) ran strong races in helping Mt. Blue outdistance third place Cony by seven points.

The Mt. Blue JV boys also took first place in their race by a dominant 24-point margin over Lincoln Academy. Scorers for the Cougars were Isaac Seigle (2), Jesse Dalton (5), Ethan McIntosh (7), Hunter Hutchins (8), and Ian Burke (18).

The Mt. Blue JV girls placed sixth lead by River Lisius (17th), and Beth Nichols (34th).
