CARRABASSETT VALLEY – With favorable weather and friendly course-conditions, low-scores were in ready-supply during today’s second round of the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Coca-Cola Junior Championship at the Sugarloaf Golf Club.
In the Junior Championships, Nelson Pang moved into the lead for in the boys’ division, following a second-round 79, while Brooke McDaugald took the lead for the girls thanks to a 75.
Pang sits at nine-over par for the tournament, 1 stroke ahead of James Turner who sits in second place. McDaugald’s second round performance put her at eleven-over par, and moved her 2 strokes ahead of second place Jiayu Kong, defending champion.
In the AJGA Coca-Cola Junior All-Star tournament, Scott Roden, of Dallas, TX., moved ahead of yesterday’s leader, Charlie Dubiel, of North Palm Beach, FL., with a second round score of 71, the only sub-par score of the tournament thus far. Dubiel dropped into second, carding a three-over 75, and Won Jun Lee of Wesley Chapel, FL., rounded out the men’s top three with a second round score of 77.
On the women’s side, the leaders following today’s second round are Lindsay May, or Auburn, NY., with a two-day combined score of 157; Christine Shao, of Green Brook, NJ., with 160; and Hailey Jones, of Dallas, TX., one stroke back at 161.
Carter Pearl, of Newport, ME, made the shot of the tournament on the par-three eleventh, when his tee shot found the bottom of the cup for a hole-in-one. Pearl finished the day in 40th overall, after a second-day 82 put him at 173 for the tournament.
Among the other players from Maine in this week’s tournaments, Eric Dugas found himself four strokes behind Pearl in 45th place, and Macarthur Kim, of Paris, ME., held on to the 48 position with a two-day combined score of 174. The only woman competing from Maine, Wynne Cushing of Freeport, held on to the 21st spot today with a second round score of 120.
The championship will resume tomorrow with the final round for both tournaments, during which time the course will be closed to the public.
The AJGA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. Many of the top golfers on the PGA and LPGA are former AJGA members, including Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson, Davis Love III, and many others.
