Ranquist leads UMF in regular season finale

CASTINE – A near double-double by University of Maine at Farmington (11-14, 10-8) senior guard, Lindsay Ranquist, powered the Beavers’ offense in Saturday afternoon’s, 52-34, conference loss at Maine Maritime Academy.

UMF struggled to find the bottom of the net in the first half by shooting 21.7 percent (5-23) while MMA shot 35.5 percent (11-31) from the floor. The Beavers were held without a three-pointer in the opening 20 minutes and MMA knocked down two attempts from long range. At halftime, the Mariners controlled the game with a, 27-14, lead.

Farmington’s defense held Maritime to 31.8 percent (7-22) shooting from the field in the final period, but MMA hit four more attempts from beyond the arc and made seven foul shots, while UMF was held scoreless in both categories. The Beavers outscored the Mariners in the paint (26-18) and bench points (14-11), but Maritime scored 16 points off 26 UMF turnovers.

MMA’s Mary Badeen led all scorers with 21 points on 7 of 12 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds for the double-double. Kristi Willey followed with 14 points and a steal. UMF was led by Ranquist with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Farmington claimed the fifth spot in the regular season standings and will travel to Colby-Sawyer on Tuesday for the North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal game. The regular season series was split between the two squads, 1-1.
