FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington Director of Athletics, Fitness, and Recreation Julie Davis, is pleased to announce the hiring of Scott Hutchinson as the new head coach for cross country and outdoor track and field.

Outdoor track and field was announced as UMF’s newest varsity sport this past February and the proposal involved merging existing cross country with new track and field head coaching responsibilities into one full-time position. After a competitive search, Hutchinson was selected to lead the programs and build upon a strong foundation shaped by Coach Joseph Staples and student leaders of the club track and field program.

“There was high interest in this position and we are thrilled to have hired an exceptionally motivated, well-rounded, seasoned and successful coach. Scott’s record speaks for itself. His extensive experience will maximize the potential of this program in short order and we are excited to have him on board to lead the way,” said Davis.

Hutchinson brings 28 years of head coaching experience to Farmington in its inaugural varsity track and field season in 2015-2016. Hutchinson comes to Farmington after serving as Marywood University’s first head men’s and women’s outdoor track and field coach since 2013 and head men’s and women’s cross country coach since 2014.

“I can’t express enough how excited I am to be joining the coaching staff at UMF. I want to thank Athletics Director, Julie Davis, and all involved in the search process for this incredible opportunity. One of my biggest goals is to become one of the top programs in the North Atlantic Conference and to make a significant jump in the New England Region,” Hutchinson expressed.

Hutchinson is no stranger to building a program from the ground up. Before serving as Marywood’s inaugural coach, he spent 15 seasons as the head men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach at Babson College before taking over as the head men’s cross country and men’s outdoor track and field coach at the University of Southern Maine for eight seasons.

Prior to Southern Maine, he coached two seasons as a head women’s cross country and track coach at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island.

His coaching resume includes 12 conference championships— four in cross country, four in outdoor track and field, and four in indoor track and field. During his career, Hutchinson is a 13-time Coach of the Year, winning the award in both cross country and track and field and was a candidate for New England Coach of the Year on five separate occasions. He guided the Huskies to four-straight top ten finishes at the NCAA New England Regional Championships from 2008-2011 and claimed two Maine State Collegiate indoor track titles in 2008 and 2010.

Under his tutelage, he coached 73 All-Conference cross country runners, 268 All-Conference outdoor track athletes, 284 All-Conference indoor track and field performers, 13 NCAA Academic All-America teams, 24 NCAA Academic All-Americans, and eight NCAA All-Americans.

Hutchinson had seventeen of his athletes named to the All-New England team in cross country and seven All-Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) cross country runners.

In track and field, he had the privilege of coaching 187 NCAA All-New England athletes and 107 All-ECAC winners.

Hutchinson also added, “With the outstanding academic reputation that UMF has and knowing how hard I recruit, I feel very confident that I can pull in some top-notch recruits from the surrounding area and from within the state of Maine. I am extremely fortunate with becoming the next head men’s and women’s cross country/new outdoor track and field coach at UMF and I see nothing but exciting times ahead.”

Hutchinson received his Bachelor of Science in Recreation Management from the University of Maine Presque Isle in 1986. He served as an assistant men’s basketball coach and the head men’s and women’s cross country coach at Presque Isle in 1986. Hutchinson was an NAIA All-New England runner with the Owls in 1985 after finishing eighth at the regional championship meet and qualified for the NAIA National Championship with a time of 24:40 in the 8K race.

The UMPI grad saw his best performances on the grass track with a 2:00 in the 800. On the dirt track, he ran the mile in 4:26 and also threw the javelin 178 feet.

A two-time NEC All-Conference performer, Hutchinson was a three-time captain and three-time MVP. He was elected to the Presque Isle Hall of Fame in 2002. Hutchinson holds a USA Track/Field Level 1 certification and is a member of the U.S. Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.
