FARMINGTON — University of Maine at Farmington Athletic Director Julie Davis announced today that Tom Sheridan of Winslow, Maine, has been hired for the interim position of men’s lacrosse head coach.
“I’m thrilled we’ve been able to attract a coach of Tom’s caliber to lead our men’s lacrosse program”, said Davis. “The breadth of his experience in the sport, especially here in the state of Maine, make him uniquely suited to this position, and I look forward to seeing the growth and development in our student-athletes under his tutelage.”
Sheridan brings immense lacrosse knowledge and experience to the table for the Beavers’ upcoming fourth season.
From 2004-2010, Sheridan was the men’s lacrosse head coach at one of the Beavers’ North Atlantic Conference (NAC) archrivals, the Terriers of Thomas College. There, in 2008, he led the men’s team to its first winning season, also receiving the NAC Team Sportsmanship Award and NAC Coach of the Year honors.
Since 1995, Sheridan has held the position of Varsity Boys’ Lacrosse coach at Messalonskee High School in Winslow where he has led the team to four appearances in the Eastern Maine Class A Championship game in the years 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2010. He also guided the Eagles to two Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference (KVAC) Class A Championships in the years 2005 and 2011.
Sheridan received KVAC Coach of the Year honors in 2005, and the Waterville Morning Sentinel Coach of the Year honors in 2005, 2010, and 2011. He plans to continue to coach the Eagles in addition to the UMF men.
At the University of Maine in Orono, Sheridan received a Master of Science in Kinesiology with a concentration in Exercise Science, and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a concentration in Health Education.
Sheridan has been a Physical Education teacher at Messalonskee since 1998. At Messalonskee, he has experience in coaching Varsity Boys’ Soccer, which he has been coaching since 2007, as well as head coaching and assistant coaching the swim team.
The UMF men’s lacrosse team ended last season with a 2-11 record (1-7 in NAC play) and earned a quarterfinal playoff game against New England College. The 2012 team was also recognized by the NAC with its first ever Team Sportsmanship Award.
