Smith’s double figures not enough for UMF at NEC

HENNIKER, N.H. – The University of Maine at Farmington (7-11, 6-5) women were outmatched at New England College in Friday night’s conference battle. The Beavers fell, 74-47, behind another strong outing from junior forward Meghan Smith.

New England College improves to 14-3 overall and 8-3 in conference play. The Pilgrims rank third in the North Atlantic Conference standings. Tonight’s loss moves Farmington into fifth place in the standing –one game ahead of Johnson State.

UMF struggled from the floor and the foul line in tonight’s meeting. The Beavers shot 36.0 percent (18-50) from the field and 35.5 percent (11-31) from the charity stripe. New England College shot nearly the same as UMF, 39.7 percent (27-68), but made up the difference from long range (40.0 percent) and the free throw line (66.7 percent).

Smith led the Beavers with 10 points and six rebounds. Elizabeth Ferry added 9 points and grabbed four rebounds. NEC’s Taylor Burgess recorded a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds.

UMF will try to get back on track tomorrow afternoon at Colby-Sawyer. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
