LYNN, Mass. – The University of Maine at Farmington softball team pounded out 35 hits over two games to sweep a non-conference doubleheader against Fisher College, Sunday afternoon at Breed Field. The Beavers posted a 13-8 win in game one, and completed the day with a 20-2 victory in game two.
Leading 3-0 after two innings in the first game of the twinbill, Farmington (4-2) posted four runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth to take control of the game with an 11-7 lead.
Shelby Bryant, Katie Clark, and Amy Jones all went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Beavers in game one, with Bryant belting a grand slam home run in the Beaver third. Kennadi Grover, Katherine Smedberg, and Devin Fitzgerald each had two hits.
Freshman Courtney Fowler allowed eight runs on 11 hits, but only three of the runs were earned and she recorded five strikeouts on her way to her first collegiate victory.
Victoria Park took the loss for Fisher, after surrendering 13 runs, 10 earned, on 16 hits and eight walks. The Falcons did have some success at the plate, with Morgan Selmi going 3-for-4 with two runs, and Kristina Brown and Jade Bracero each plating two runs.
Game two turned into a rout for the Beavers in the fourth inning, when Farmington added 11 runs to effectively put the game away.
Sophomore Emily Soule tripled home three runs in the Farmington third, after Alison Hamilton drew a bases loaded walk and Cassidy Morrow single home another run.
UMF pounded out its 11 runs in the fourth on eight hits, including two-run singles by Bryant, Morrow, Hannah Lust, Natasha DeRoche, and Allison White.
Soule went 5-for-5 at the plate in game two, scoring two runs and driving in three more. Lust and DeRoche each had three hits with three RBI.
Freshman Kristen Manzo got the start in the circle for the Beavers, and picked up her first collegiate victory after scattering nine hits and allowing just two earned runs over her five innings of work.
Jayla Vega took the loss for Fisher, yielding all 20 runs, 18 of them earned, on 19 hits and eight walks. Vega went 2-for-3 at the plate to help her own cause, while Brown and Bracero also had a pair of hits in game two.
Farmington will return to the field on Tuesday, April 15, when it travels to Lewiston to face Bates College. Start time for the doubleheader is 3:30 p.m.
