GREENWOOD – The University of Maine at Farmington alpine ski team had a total of eight racers finish in the top 10 in two United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) Thompson Division giant slalom races at Mt. Abram Ski Resort on Saturday afternoon.
In the first men’s race of the day, Mitchell and Marshall Golas (Brookline, N.H./Brookline) grabbed top 10 spots with a sixth place and ninth place finish. Mitchell led the team in sixth at 1:43.35, while Marshall trailed his brother by five seconds (1:48.84) in ninth place. The Beavers had four members of the team rank in consecutive order with Jeremy Demers (Boscawen, N.H./Bishop Brady) in 11th place (1:49.37), Jedidiah Stevens (Coplin Plantation/Mt. Abram) in 12th place (1:51.50), Jacob Violette (Norridgewock, Maine/Skowhegan) in 13th place (1:51.49), and Matt Lulofs (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) in 14th place (1:53.26).
UMF ranked third overall on the team leaderboard with 26 points. The University of Maine won the first race with 12 points and Bowdoin came in second with 20 points. Bates finished fourth with 41 points.
Stevens had the best run of the day for the Beavers in the second race. Stevens closed out the race with a combined time of 1:38.19 for eighth place. Mitchell Golas trailed Stevens in ninth place by only half of a second at 1:38.75. Demers ranked tenth overall and had a total time of 1:40.60 after the two runs. Marshall Golas and Lulof rounded out UMF’s scoring with 14th and 15th place finishes.
UMF placed third as a team in the second race behind Bowdoin (6 points) and the University of Maine (17 points) with 27 points. Bates came in fourth with 43 points.
Lindsey Jacques (Jay, Maine/Spruce Mountain) won the first women’s race of the morning. Jacques topped the competition by nearly a full second with a time of 1:38.78. Paige Butterfield (Jay, Maine/Spruce Mountain) had another solid run in tenth place at 1:52.64. UMF placed third with 25 points, behind the University of Maine with 12 points and Bowdoin with 21 points.
In the second women’s race, Jacques ranked fourth overall at 1:37.38. Butterfield notched her second top ten race of the day in ninth place at 1:49.38. The team placed fourth with 27 points, trailing the University of Maine with 11 points, Bowdoin with 20 points, and Bates with 25 points.
The UMF Nordic team will race tomorrow morning at Titcomb Mountain.
