UMF baseball: Beavers shine with a Senior Day sweep

FARMINGTON – University of Maine at Farmington baseball (23-14, 15-9) capped off the regular season with a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader sweep of Colby-Sawyer College (13-22, 8-16) on Senior Day at Hippach Field.

The Beavers’ pitching staff held the Chargers to only one run on eight hits in the twinbill. UMF won 4-0 in the first game and then had an offensive burst in the second game with a 9-1 victory.

Ben Keene (Livermore, Maine/Spruce Mountain) produced the first run of the first game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning. Farmington added one more run in the frame after scoring on an infield error by the Chargers.

UMF used a two-out rally in the fifth inning to boost its lead to 3-0. Sean Cabaniss (Vassalboro, Maine/Erskine Academy) and Keene lined back-to-back singles before Tom Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine Academy) crushed an RBI single into left field.

The Beavers loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning and tacked on another run after Trevor Hisler (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan) hit a sacrifice fly.

Kyle Peterson (Bethel, Maine/Telstar) threw a complete game three-hitter in his final appearance at Hippach Field. The senior fanned three Chargers and picked up his fifth win of the season.

The offense came alive in game two as the Beavers tallied four runs in the second inning and five more runs in the third inning. Jimmy Neal (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) was 2-for-3 in the nightcap with four RBI thanks to a home run in the third inning. Dustin McCrossin (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) posted a pair of hits, runs, and RBI. McCrossin combined to hit 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI in the doubleheader.

Jory Humphrey (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine Academy) picked up the win in game two. The senior allowed one earned run on three hits with one strikeout.

UMF closed out the regular season with a 15-4 record in its final 19 games.

UMF will wait for the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) to announce playoff seeding for the 2016 NAC Championship Tournament, which starts on Friday.
