UMF men and women’s soccer defeated by Colby-Sawyer teams

FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington women’s soccer team (8-8) were silenced by Colby-Sawyer, 5-1, in the regular season finale at Prescott Field on Saturday.

Maura Kane’s header seven minutes into the game gave the Chargers the early lead. Kelsey Campbell bended a corner kick into the box and Kane was sitting in perfect position to give CSC the 1-0 lead.

Campbell added a second assist with 10:35 left in the first half, this time on a throw-in. Campbell’s throw in two-hopped into the box for Sarah Little to line a bullet into the top right corner of the net.

The Chargers added three more second half goals. The first came from Michelle Upham in the 51st minute. Rachel Quaye took a shot from the corner but was deflected by UMF keeper Thia Bridges, and Upham was there for the put back.

Kelsey Campbell gave CSC a 4-0 lead in the 53rd minute with a header. Domnique Papa passed a cross through the box and Campbell sent home the header.

CSC scored their final goal of the game in the 72nd minute when Lizzie Jorgensen’s shot was not deflected by Bridges, but Bridges could not get enough glove on the save to keep it from finding the net.

UMF broke the shutout with 3:23 left in the game. Avalon Amador chased a ball down on the goal line and passed through two CSC defenders to fellow senior Alexandra Crocker. Crocker trapped the passed and fired a shot at CSC goalie Karley Hamilton, who deflected the shot but the two-hopped into the left side of the net.

Thia Bridges made her first career start for the Beavers and saved seven shots in 78:19 of play.

UMF women finish the regular season as the Number 4 seed and will host New England College on Sunday, Nov. 2. Game is to be determined.

Men’s soccer: Colby-Sawyer 6, UMF 0

FARMINGTON – NAC leading Colby-Sawyer College shutout the UMF (1-15-1) men’s soccer team, 6-0, Saturday afternoon at Prescott Field in the season finale.

The Chargers took the lead late in the first half when Alex Ortega found the back of the net in the 31st minute. Denali Sexton crossed left inside the box and Ortega lined a shot into the right side of the goal to give CSC the 1-0 edge.

Denali Sexton doubled the Chargers lead five minutes later when he beat the Beavers defense with fancy footwork and ball play. Sexton attacked from the left side and forced UMF keeper Ronie Morales to commit to the ball. Once Morales attempted for a save, Sexton booted a grounder past Morales into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Chris DiCecca increased the lead to 3-0 just 52 seconds into the second half after getting an assist from Max Yee. Ortega added two more goals for the hat trick in the 51st and 63rd minute. Isaac Nicholas scored the final goal in the 85th minute to give the Chargers the final margin of victory.

The Beavers best scoring chance came late in the first half. Jordan Luks sent a cross through the Chargers defense to Austin Dooley, but Dooley’s shot sailed high.

Ronie Morales saved nine shots for the Beavers and finishes the season with 114 saves, tying him for the fifth best season in UMF history.

UMF men finish the season ninth in the NAC final regular season standings.
