UMF women’s soccer shutout 1-0 at Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. – The University of Maine at Farmington (2-5) allowed a goal early in the first half, but could not even the game and lost 1-0 at Castleton on Sunday afternoon.

Castleton’s Sarah Carlson scored the match winner in the 14th minute of regulation when she recorded her fifth goal of her young Spartan career. The freshman gathered the ball five yards outside of the box on the far side, delivered a bender into the top corner of the net and gave the Spartans the early ead. .

The Beavers had a chance to tie the game in the 18th minute with a corner kick opportunity. Avalon Amador’s found the foot of Angelica Horne, but Horne’s shot sailed high.

UMF could not convert on another corner kick chance with 10 minutes left in the half. Katie Clark presented a chance to Sara Quimby, but her shot was blocked by a Spartan defender.

Katie Clark’s shot in the 72nd minute could have tied the game if her boot found the back of the net, but her shot was blocked by Castleton keeper Jessica Binkowski.

Amador had one more chance with 1:02 left on the clock, but she could not even the score as Binkowski came through with another clutch save.

Sam Hatch, dropped to 2-5 after making 10 saves in the loss. Binkowski finished the match with three saves en route to her sixth victory and fourth shutout of the season.

UMF will return home for their last game in the month of September on Tuesday when the Beavers host Colby for a 4 p.m. game.
