ATLANTA – University of Maine at Farmington women’s basketball senior forward Elizabeth Ferry (Winslow, Maine/Winslow) was selected as a participant in the 2016 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) “So You Want to be a Coach” program.

The 14th annual WBCA “So You Want to be a Coach” program is a three-day workshop held April 1-3, 2016, in conjunction with the WBCA Convention in Indianapolis and the site of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Division I Final Four.

Ferry is only one of 11 NCAA Division III women’s basketball players to receive the award. She will join 74 other members, which includes players from the professional ranks of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) to NCAA Division I players from schools such as Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, Purdue, Texas, and Wake Forest.

The objectives of the “So You Want to be a Coach” program are to increase the understanding and application of skills necessary to secure coaching positions in women’s basketball, increase the understanding and awareness of competencies necessary for success in coaching, introduce female basketball players to coaches and administrators, and raise awareness of the existing talent pool of female basketball players who have a passion and interest in coaching the game of women’s basketball.

As a coach, Ferry guided the Mt. Blue Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade boy’s soccer teams to back-to-back undefeated seasons in 2013 and 2014. She has served as head coach of the Mt. Blue youth girl’s basketball teams and currently coaches the girl’s undergrad team.

As a basketball coach counselor, Ferry has worked at numerous camps over the New England Regions, including at Colby College, Thomas College, Maine Hoop Camp, Maine Gold Rush Basketball Camp, University of Southern Maine, and the University of Vermont.

“So You Want to be a Coach” participants will learn about recruiting, the administrative side to coaching, how to get hired, skill development, the importance of knowing the rules, and how to balance work and life.

In the classroom, Ferry posted a 3.943 cumulative grade point average, earned a spot on the UMF Dean’s List seven times, and made the NAC All-Academic Team last season.

Last week, the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) selected Ferry as the women’s basketball Senior Scholar-Athlete and named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.

Qualified candidates must have exhausted their final year of basketball eligibility at a four-year institution or have graduated within the past year. In addition, the candidate’s head coach has to nominate them and must be an active WBCA member. Each participant is selected based on her academics, contributions to women’s basketball on and off the court, professional resume and a written recommendation from her head coach.
