GORHAM – The University of Maine at Farmington softball team (4-18) were searching for a key hit on Thursday, but the University of Southern Maine was able to steal both games of a non-conference doubleheader at Towers Field. USM held on for a, 1-0, in round one and then silenced UMF in round two, 9-0.

The Beavers had a runner in scoring position in the third inning when Alison Hamilton (Portsmouth, R.I.) lined a single into left field. The subtle rally ended with a ground out to the shortstop.

After the Huskies claimed the one run in the fourth inning, UMF tried to tie the game in the last inning. Hannah Lust (Bangor, Maine) led off with a single to right field. After a sacrifice bunt and a ground out, the Beavers needed a clutch two-out hit to tie the game but could not get one to fall as a fly out to right field ended the game.

Emily Vitone (Westminster, Mass.) pitched a complete game with one strikeout and surrendered one earned run.

Farmington was held in check in the second game with only two hits. Kennadi Grover (Cushing, Maine) singled through the left side in the first inning and Lust launched a single to right center, but the Beavers could not scrap enough hits together to produce a run.

UMaine-Farmington returns to conference action with a doubleheader on Friday against New England College. The first game is set for 3 p.m. at Prescott Field.
