USM tops UMF in non-conference duel

PORTLAND – The University of Southern Maine men’s lacrosse team muscled its way to an 18-1, non-conference win over the University of Maine at Farmington (0-6, 0-1) on Wednesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The clock ticked below eight minutes left in the third quarter when Nathan Chase (Wells, Maine) beat Southern Maine goalie Zach Bessette to break the shutout.

UMF was presented with eight man-up opportunities, including six in the second quarter, but could not take advantage.

Sean Zubrod (Sidney, Maine) led the Beavers with six ground balls and caused two turnovers. Josh Smith (Sidney, Maine) was also key on defense and scooped up four ground balls of his own.

Joseph Maldonado (Fresno, CA) stopped 15 Southern Maine shots that came his way.

UMF returns to conference action on Tuesday, March 31 with a trip to Husson.
