FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington women’s basketball team (1-2) grabbed its first win of the season and snapped a 10-game skid against non-conference rival Bates College (0-1) with a 61-53 upset on Friday night at Dearborn Gymnasium.

Meghan Smith (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay) led all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting and cashed in seven free throws. Smith narrowly recorded her second straight double-double, but had a very respectable game on the glass with nine rebounds.

Fellow starters Cheyenne Malloy (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan) and Kennadi Grover (Cushing, Maine/Oceanside) also added double figures for the Beavers. Malloy scored 12 points with nine of them coming from long range. Grover charted ten points with three rebounds and one block.

Nina Davenport tallied 15 points to power the Bobcats. Davenport was efficient from the floor with nine points coming from beyond the arc and a pair from the charity stripe.

With seconds left in the third quarter, the Beavers claimed their first lead of the game when Jenessa Talarico (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) grabbed a loose ball in front of her own bench and launched a deep three-pointer and her shot found nothing but the bottom of the net. On the ensuing possessions of the fourth quarter, UMF sank two more from long range to build momentum, which propelled the team to create a lead as large as 11 points with under five minutes to play.

UMF hosts Saint Joseph’s College on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
