LEWISTON – The University of Maine at Farmington women’s basketball team (0-3, 0-0) bench was outscored 40-18, in Thursday’s, 97-61, non-conference loss to Bates College.
Junior forward Elizabeth Ferry, of Winslow, made a layup on the Beavers’ first possession and Meghan Smith, of Boothbay, added a layup of her own, one minute later to give UMF a, 4-3 lead, but then the Bates offense took control of the game.
The Bobcats blew the game open with a 28-6 run over the next nine minutes of the first half, giving Bates a 31-10 advantage. UMF continued to chip away at the deficit and slimmed the lead to 16 with five minutes remaining in the opening half.
Bates held a, 50-31, lead at halftime by shooting 20-of-37 from the floor and 9-of-17 from the beyond the arc. The Beavers shot 12-of-34 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
The Bobcats did not cool off in the second half and continued to hit from the outside, shooting 6-of-13 from three-point land and 18-of-33 from the floor.
UMF improved from the field in the second half, shooting 11-for-26 and 7-of-12 from the line. UMF cashed in from the charity stripe for the game, finishing 13-of-18.
Meghan Smith led the Beavers with 12 points, eight coming in the second half, on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Freshman Kelly Pomerleau, of Turner, added 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting and 5-of-6 in free throws. Bates’ Chelsea Nason held a game-high with 17 points.
University of Maine at Farmington returns to action on Monday as the Beavers travel to Saint Joseph’s (Me.) at 5:30 p.m.
