WILTON – More than 100 participants turned out for a beautiful day and run along Wilson Lake on Saturday in support of the Fit Girls programs. The girls in 4th and 5th grades at Academy Hill School and Cape Cod Hill School spent the last 7 weeks in preparation to run and complete this 5k. The running and reading after school program will be expanded this spring to include Cascade Brook as well.

Special thanks to Franklin Savings Bank and Western Mountain Financial Services for sponsoring the event. Also, special thanks to Rose Hines and all the volunteers who organized and came out to support the girls and participants. Fit Girls is much more than just running. It is a program helping girls achieve goals and developing self-esteem. For more information about the program, contact Deb Aseltine 645-9648.

  1. Just curious, is there going to be a ‘Fit Boys 5K Benefit’ run? If not, can any area boy participate in any of this groups activities?

  2. @Bruce
It’s ok for girls and boys to do separate activities sometimes. Why don’t you start the “Fit Boys 5K” program if you think there is a need.

Great turnout for this! Way to go!

  3. Why can’t it be the FIT KIDS 5K? Why does it have to be segregated? Shouldn’t we be motivating children, regardless of gender to have a more active life style? Especially since we live in a time where the TV, Computer, Cell phones, Video Games dominate the way we live.

I understand the concept behind Fit Girls, but I think that is sending the wrong message…just a personal opinion. We live in a society where we are pushing for Gender Equality, if we are really going to fight it, shouldn’t we start with our youth?

  4. Jose – I think it’s not really about inclusion or equality when the whole let’s all be equal debates take place. It’s about exclusion … as long as it’s not my gender or race that’s being excluded, then it’s ok.
