Zhang and Sun tied for the lead after Round 1

CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Round one of the 54-hole American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Coca-Cola Junior Championship and Coca-Cola Junior All-star kicked off this morning at the Sugarloaf Golf Club, and will resume with round two tomorrow morning.

After earning their spots on the tournament roster just yesterday in the qualifying round, Charles Sun, of Bradenton, FL, and Tianlin Zhang, of Concord, MA, walked away tied for the top spot after today’s round one with a blistering 73; one over par. Trailing the top two by one stroke was Nelson Pang, of San Ramon, CA, with a 74.

On the women’s side, Madeleine Garay, of La Jolla, CA, took the top spot with a six-over par, 78; followed by Belinda Hu of San Ramon, CA with a 79; and Brooke McDaugald of The Woodlands, TX, finished out the women’s top three with a first round score of 80.

Among the players from Maine in this week’s tournaments, Macarthur Kim of Paris finished out the day in a three-way tie for 45th with a score of 89 and Wynne Cushing of Freeport closed out the day with a round one score of 125. Competing in the Junior All-Star tournament were Eric Dugas of Pittsfield and Carter Pearl of Newport.

The championship will resume with the second and final rounds taking place tomorrow, and Wednesday; during which time the course will be closed to the public.
