Bulldog Technical Assistance
"To err is human, but to really foul things up requires a computer."
-- Farmers' Almanac, 1978
On this page you'll find some basic information about our web site, how to navigate it and a few answers to some really common questions. You're always welcome to email us at editor@dailybulldog.com with your comments, suggestions and concerns. A lot of great information about useful computer tips and programs can be found here: bulldogtipstricks.blogspot.com, written by our own Guy Griscom.
VISTA ALERT
Microsoft’s much ballyhooed release of the VISTA Operating System has come up against a wall of problems. From its delayed release (which in Micro-speak is normal procedure) last January through the early months of summer, there have been so many complaints about Vista that even Microsoft has decided to stop pretending everything is fine. How to Navigate the Bulldog
• At the top of this page, and all of the other pages of our web site, you will see a bar with ten words in blue (News, Opinion, Arts and so forth). Clicking on any one of those ten buttons will take you to a different part of our site, with different stories, letters, pictures and information for your consideration.
• Whenever you are on one of those pages (such as News, etc.) you can return to the main page (what we call the site's "Index") by clicking the "Home" button, which is in the absolute upper-right of the screen.
• Clicking on headlines (which are in large letters, blue and underlined) will open a pop-up page with the associated story and picture, if available. Please note, on most computers you can only have a single pop-up open at one time, so to read additional stories you will need to first close the pop-up. We use a pop-up system because it allows people with slower computers and/or internet providers to access our site quickly.
• Clicking on the advertisements on the side of the screen will take you to their web sites, if available. Please visit our advertisers, they're the ones who let us present this web site, and the print edition of the Daily Bulldog, at no cost.
• Most of our stories will have an email link at the bottom of the page. Clicking on that email link will open your email program with our address already loaded. We love feedback, so let us know what you think and how we can improve!
Common Problems and Questions
We will continue to add new questions here, as they become evident.
What Does "From the Print Edition" Mean?
In addition to this web site, we operate a monthly printed edition, which has entirely new feature stories, columns, how-to advice and information about subjects ranging from gardening to computers to cooking to health. At the end of each month, as we release our new edition, we post the material from last month's printed edition, for those who don't have access to the over 90+ stores in Franklin County where it is offered. If you are interested in getting the printed edition of the Daily Bulldog, you can email us at editor@dailybulldog.com, call us at (207) 778 - 6905, or write to us at:

We do ask for $20 for a year's subscription, which basically pays for the postage.
Why Won't the Stories Load For Me?
The most common reason is that you have already opened a pop-up window, and left it up. Check to make sure you don't have a pop-up window open and if you do, close it before opening a new one.
OK, I Know that, But the Stories Still Won't Load. Why?
Some people with older versions of internet browsers may experience problems trying to load our stories. This is usually due to the Pop-up Blocker built into Internet Explorer. To correct this problem, click on Tools, at the top of your screen, then Pop-up Blocker. Choose Pop-up Blocker Settings, which should bring up a new menu. In the box marked Add, type in www.dailybulldog.com. This will allow you to access our stories which use pop-up windows to make the site easier to use and load faster.
Nope, Still Nothing. What Now?
Uh oh! There are a few other reasons why a story may not load. Some computers have "Pop-up Blocker" built into a third-party security program. Consult with that program's help option to figure out how to allow pop-ups from our site. There also exists the possibility that something is messed up on our end. If that is the case, the problem should be resolved as soon as we possibly can.
